For an energy efficient house there are a bewildering number of choices of heating systems. With recent changes in the Building Regulations only high efficiency boilers can now be installed in new houses. The first decision to be made is what fuel is to be used. The main fuels available are oil, natural gas, LPG, electricity and solid fuel. Some of the fuels will need storage especially solid fuel, which some people may find bulky and unsightly.

This type of boiler, burning gas or oil, condenses the flue gases and increases the efficiency of combustion to approximately 92% or higher. These boilers are more costly to buy than conventional boilers but the price difference will be recovered over 10–15 years due to reduced annual running costs. These boilers, which operate at maximum efficiency when running at lower temperatures are ideal for under floor heating systems. For radiator systems operated at lower temperatures the radiators may need to be oversized to provide the required heat output. A condensing boiler will emit a plume of water vapour to the atmosphere during operation, which is normal and harmless.
